Lanny Morrow, Applied Analytics and Intelligence-Forensic Intelligence, Forvis Mazars

Lanny Morrow is a testifying expert in statistical analysis and digital forensics, and a leader in the field of applied analytics
and artificial intelligence, with 30 years of experience at Forvis Mazars. Lanny combines investigative domain expertise
with advanced data and AI engineering to help organizations detect fraud, uncover hidden patterns in data, predict events
and outcomes, and understand complex environments. He is currently the Data & Intelligence Engineering lead for the
Forvis Mazars Analytics and Applied Intelligence division.

A pioneer in applied AI for investigations, Lanny has designed and built proprietary artificial intelligence systems since
2008, including machine learning and natural language processing models used to detect anomalies, analyze
communication tone and sentiment, reveal hidden social network structures, and track the evolution of topics and
behavioral indicators across time. These tools accelerate early-stage investigations by surfacing the most relevant,
high-value information across financial records, email collections, documents, social media, and other structured and
unstructured data sources. These platforms are also used for identifying fraudulent claims, credit default risk, healthcare
denials prediction and other non-investigative projects.

Lanny also teaches, writes, and speaks extensively on AI ethics, emerging technologies, cyber risk, and the future of
fraud detection, contributing to university-level textbooks and multiple publications for the Association of Certified Fraud
Examiners.

Title: Can AI Spot Fraud? Live Demonstrations, Lessons Learned, and Practical Applications

Everyone is talking about AI. The more important question is whether AI can actually help fraud examiners do their jobs better and play an effective role in organization-wide fraud, waste, and abuse prevention.

This interactive session explores real-world fraud detection scenarios using modern AI tools. Participants will participate in live demonstrations involving suspicious transactions, conflicts of interest, unusual relationships, investigative prioritization, and communication to leadership. Along the way, we'll discuss where AI performs well, where it struggles, and how organizations are beginning to incorporate AI into broader fraud-monitoring and risk-management programs.

We'll also explore the importance of data readiness and why effective AI initiatives require a solid foundation of accessible, reliable, and well-governed data. Attendees will learn why successful AI initiatives often begin with improving the quality, structure, and transparency of the underlying information used to support fraud detection and monitoring.

Rather than focusing on theory, this session emphasizes practical applications that attendees can understand, evaluate, and potentially implement within their own organizations in the near term and with little investment.

Takeaways:

  1. Evaluate real-world AI capabilities for fraud detection and investigation.
  2. Observe how AI can analyze data, identify anomalies, and generate investigative leads.
  3. Recognize common limitations, risks, and validation requirements associated with AI outputs.
  4. Identify opportunities to incorporate AI into fraud-monitoring activities.
  5. Understand how AI can support a continuous-improvement , or “flywheel effect” approach to fraud monitoring.
  6. Recognize the data-readiness requirements that support effective AI adoption, including data quality, governance, accessibility, and structure.
